About us

Who we are

Biogone is an Australian owned business located in Melbourne, Australia.

We are innovators in landfill-biodegradable plastic technology, working with local and international suppliers to produce cost-effective landfill-biodegradable and home compostable everyday plastic products.

Biogone was one of the first businesses to introduce landfill-biodegradable plastic to the Australian market; a product that is now used across 25 countries.

Background

Biogoneâ„¢ is a product range developed by FieldTech Solutions, a company formed by eco-conscious people Ross & Ramona Headifen and John Mancarella, who have been supplying environmental equipment for more than 20 years to the groundwater, and contaminated land related industries.

As long time advocates for plastic waste reform, Dr Ross and Ramona Headifen were deeply impacted by the volume of plastic waste they saw during a two year volunteering trip to Tanzania; and upon returning home, they fostered one of the biggest community litter collection volunteer groups in Melbourne, called Beach Patrol.

The litter collection movement instigated by Beach Patrol snowballed into a business idea. Ross partnered with John Mancarella to establish FieldTech Solutions in 2012, supplying sustainable products for the environmental industry. The Biogone range was established soon after, in 2013. The joint mission of both businesses was driven by a similar goal; to reduce the 84% of single-use plastic that ends up in landfill.

Our position on plastics

We believe if single-use plastics must be used then they should be made to be recyclable and biodegrade where they will be disposed of – in a landfill, commercial or home compost facility.

Our landfill-biodegradable plastics are both biodegradable and recyclable; and our home compostable plastics are biodegradable and compostable. Our landfill-biodegradable and home compostable plastics are a logical substitute for everyday plastics due to the long-term impact of plastics on the environment, which can last for centuries. Some of our products are made with 50% or even 100% recycled plastic, and others with plant-based materials.

Our philosophy and practice is in line with the National Plastic Ban and 2025 National Packaging Target, which aims ‘to have all packaging 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable’.

Position on Plastics

We do not use or support ‘degradable’ or ‘oxo-degradable’ plastic products, which feature fragmentable additives and do not meet relevant standards.

Our landfill-biodegradable and home compostable plastics are the perfect substitute for everyday plastics, while being conscious of the environment.

About Us

Technology benefits

Our innovative landfill-biodegradable technology is made by combining traditional plastic with an organic additive, with the benefits of it being recyclable, once disposed to landfill, biodegradation is accelerated approximately 90+% faster than conventional plastics; biodegrading into an organic matter, producing a natural fertiliser and no microplastics.

Additionally, Biogone landfill-biodegradable plastic biodegrades faster, therefore the methane gas can be captured within the timeframe the landfill is actively managed, rather than being released into the atmosphere over hundreds of years after the landfill has closed and stopped being managed. This methane captured can also be used for fuel and energy production – waste to energy.
