Nurseries around Australia use thousands of garden pots and seedling trays every year and if the pots are not made with PP plastics marked with the recycling symbol ‘5’ then they cannot be recycled. Most often than not ending up in landfills.

Seed and Shovel have been growing seedlings in Biogone’s seedling pots since establishment. Jessie Sullivan the Founder said “Seed and Shovel pride itself on delivering high quality, rare plants, with a zero-waste policy. I was looking for accessible plastic alternative pot and packaging items and only found Biogone as my only option unless ordering from overseas.”
Like many, Jessie uses them to grow and to sell, as well as deliver the seedlings. “They are great and work perfectly for both. Just like plastic – but better! We now purchase all plastic-free products for packaging our plants – mostly from Biogone!”
Once the seedlings have been removed and ready for repotting, the seeding pots can be reused for the next round of seed planting. Or for individuals to return them back to the store scheme.
The pots are designed so that once they can no longer serve their original purpose, they can be disposed of to rubbish and once in a landfill, will biodegrade approximately 90+ percent faster than conventional seedling pots. Biodegrading into an organic matter, producing a natural fertiliser and no microplastics.
According to Dr Ross Headifen, co-founder of Biogone, the demand within the industry has been steadily increasing as small to medium-size businesses are looking at different ways to package their products or inject the Biogone products into their business.
